In February 2024, a community member made a request for a volleyball net in our district. Representing a group of volleyball enthusiasts, they highlighted the absence of public volleyball facilities in the Waimakariri District, which has left players travelling to Christchurch to play.
Volleyball is a popular sport in New Zealand, particularly in secondary schools. Volleyball is a dynamic non-contact sport for all ages, abilities, genders and ethnicities. The installation of a volleyball net would provide a local venue for this widely enjoyed sport.
The net will be permanently available for the public to use, encouraging the community to recreate in our local parks and reserves which boosts mental, social, and physical well-being.
Site Selection
Council staff have identified Kaiapoi Domain as the most suitable location for the volleyball net due to the large availability of open space. There are two locations within the Domain with suitable space.
The two locations are close to amenities, activate the space and complement existing usage. Both locations have the advantage of being close to public toilets, rubbish bins, picnic tables and the playground.

Funding and Costs
The net and posts are estimated to be approximately $5,000. A subsequent report will be presented to the Kaiapoi Tuahiwi Community Board seeking approval to install the net and approval to allocate up to $5,000 of funding from the Board’s General Landscaping Budget if there is community support for this project.
Surface Options
The surface would remain as grass and the playing space would be 16 metres by 8 metres when in use. The net is 10 metres long within this space and is intended for social use. The posts for the volleyball net would be concreted into the ground and up permanently for the community to enjoy.
Community Feedback
Now, we need your input to help us understand if the community support the installation of a volleyball net in Kaiapoi Domain, and if so in which location. Your feedback will help the Kaiapoi Tuahiwi Community Board to make an informed decision on this project.
