Consultation has concluded
We’re proposing to create an off-leash dog exercise area at the Oaks Reserve Walkway in Oxford.
There has been growing interest in the Oxford area for a rural township dog exercise area to enable off lead dog walking for some years.
The Oxford Ohoka Community Board have identified The Oaks Walkway as the location for this area and has been exploring ways to achieve this since 2015.
Budget for the project was allocated as part of the 2021/31 Long Term Plan and a concept plan was developed as part of the submission process.
What we’re proposing:
The Oaks Walkway is located at 90 High Street in Oxford, and backs onto the Oxford Cemetery. The reserve is approximately 3.6 hectares and includes a shaded area under the Oak trees as well as a large open space to the southeast of the reserve.
The Oaks Reserve Master Plan shows a small car park area, area for proposed exercise area with fencing, an entrance portal, and a seat inside with only a mown path within the actual exercise area. A pathway would lead to the entrance of the dog park including a small bridge over the drainage channel. A rubbish bin with a poo bag dispenser would be included in the vicinity of this entrance also.
Should this plan be approved by the Community Board, we are interested to know if any community volunteers would like to be part of this project. This could include community planting days for the areas of native planting around the outside of the exercise area as well as other activities. Once feedback closes on 5pm Sunday 18 February, staff will prepare a report for the Oxford-Ohoka Community Board that will be considered at their following meeting. The Board will determine at that time whether to approve the concept plan for construction.
