Cemeteries provide a quiet, reflective place to say goodbye and remember loved ones. They also tell a story about the history of our District.

The first step is to develop a draft Cemetery Strategy and we’re keen to hear your thoughts.

As the District grows and to align with updated legislation, we’re planning for how we develop and maintain our cemeteries to make sure we have enough space set aside to allow for future interments.

The Strategy broadly outlines the objectives and actions needed to plan for demand and manage our cemeteries for the next 20 years.

As the District grows and to align with updated legislation, we’re planning for how we develop and maintain our cemeteries to make sure we have enough space set aside to allow for future interments.

The Strategy broadly outlines the objectives and actions needed to plan for demand and manage our cemeteries for the next 20 years.

The main objectives in the Strategy are:

  1. Council cemeteries meet growth demand and community expectations
  2. Cemeteries are designed effectively, are safe and comply with the requirements of relevant legislation
  3. Up-to-date information regarding Council managed cemeteries is readily available
  4. Clear direction for Council staff and the community regarding the use and management of cemeteries is provided.

Later this year we will develop a Cemetery Policy to support the Strategy. The Policy will guide the day-to-day management of Council cemeteries around things like memorial headstones, how you can decorate graves and the reservation of ashes or burial plots. The public will have an opportunity to provide feedback on the policy too.
