Upgrades to Waikuku Beach Surf Life Saving Club
Consultation has concluded
The Waikuku Beach Surf Life Saving Club (WBSLSC) has occupied the beach front at Waikuku for several decades. Its current club rooms were opened in 1979 after a joint fundraising effort between Council, central government, Surf Life Saving New Zealand, and the local community.
WBSLSC lifeguards patrol during the summer season to ensure everyone can have fun but remain safe in the water. They also run surf lifesaving programmes and sports opportunities for all ages of the community.
The WBSLSC are proposing to install a storage shed and extend the concrete pad that runs across the front of the club. Having a secure and functional storage space will allow the WBSLSC to continue to provide their services to a high standard and the concrete pad extension will improve access to the front of the building for emergency services and for those with mobility issues.
Installing a storage shed and extending the concrete pad are supported activities under the Waikuku Beach Reserve Spatial Activity Plan. The Spatial Activity Plan helps Council staff and the Community Board when making decisions regarding the allocation of space in Waikuku. The Plan was approved by the Community Board in February 2023 after consultation with the community.
What we’re proposing
The proposed storage shed is 108m2 and 3.5 metres in height. The shed will be coloured Sandstone Grey to match the existing building roof. The proposed location for the shed is currently being used for storage, including a temporary storage container which would be removed to make way for the shed.
The proposed storage shed will require minimal use (1-2 metres) of Council Recreation Reserve land, managed under the Reserves Act 1977, and therefore Council is required to seek community views on any changes.
The existing concrete pad would be extended by 6 metres on the ocean side of the building.
The public’s access to the beach won’t be impeded by these changesand the proposal will be funded entirely by the WBSLSC.

Tell us what you think
We want to know if you think Council should grant permission for the Waikuku Beach Surf Life Saving Club to use 1-2 metres of Recreation Reserve Land for its proposed new storage shed, and an extension to the concrete pad at the front of the building.
