Consultation has concluded
We’re proposing to relocate the Pines Beach playground to a new area of Pines Oval to make the playground usable all year-round. We’d love your help to make this happen!
The Pines Beach Playground is currently located at the northern end of Pines Oval at the Kay Avenue / Batten Grove corner.
The playground has had ongoing flooding issues making the playground unusable for parts of the year and despite attempts to resolve the flooding issues the problem has not improved.
What we’re proposing:
Pines Oval has been surveyed to identify areas of higher ground that would be suitable for the playground relocation. The survey information alongside a staff assessment of current activity on Pines Oval has led to a proposed new location and Concept Plan for the Playground.
The proposed location is on the south-eastern side of the Oval on Batten Grove. This location is on higher ground, located amongst existing similar activities and community facilities, and has ease of access for users.
We’re also proposing to raise the height of the playground to further reduce future risk of the playground being unusable during periods of flooding.
The current play equipment, bench seat and litter bin would all be relocated to the new location and a new accessible picnic table added. A footpath would link the new play area to the existing facilities in the area.
Tell us what you think!
We welcome your feedback on the proposed location and concept plan for the playground. We’d also be interested to hear from anyone who would like to get involved in the relocation project by lending a hand.
Next steps
Once feedback closes on 17 November, staff will prepare a report for the Kaiapoi-Tuahiwi Community Board that will be considered at their following meeting. The Board will determine at that time whether to support the relocation proposal.
We are aware that there are a number of community members within the Pines Community who may wish to be more involved in this project going forward. If the proposal goes ahead with the support of the community and Community Board, we would like to give people an opportunity to assist with this relocation project should they wish to. This could include tasks like moving soil, dismantling the existing play equipment and beautifying the new play area. If you’re interested in joining our project team, please complete the expression of interest section on the feedback survey.
