Consultation has concluded

In response to concerns raised by residents, Council has reviewed the current parking availability and use in Johnson Street, Beach Grove in Kaiapoi.

This assessment identified that parking on both sides of the road in multiple locations made the road very narrow in parts for through traffic. There were also cars parked on the berms which causes damage and and breaches the Parking Bylaw. Finally, parking in the cul-de-sac disrupts rubbish collection and other larger vehicle movements.

Due to the layout of the road with kerbs, driveways, and berms on both sides, widening the road to provide parking bays is not a cost-effective option.

The Council are considering a number of options to maintain thru access and would like your feedback.

Option One (As shown in orange on map)

This would have no parking on opposite sides of the street including the cul-de-sac. This is Council’s preferred option as it provides the most on-street parking.

Option Two (As shown in red on map)

This removes parking from in front of houses that have additional parking options on side streets but doesn’t provide as many on-street parking spaces as option one.

Option Three (As shown in blue on map)

This would have no parking on opposite sides of the street including the cul-de-sac but only west of Ngahua Street. This doesn’t maximise parking and may cause issues with people choosing to park in other parts of Johnson Street. If this option is selected, the Council could continue to monitor parking and can extend parking restrictions in the future.

Option Four – Retain the status quo

This is not the preferred option because it does not address any of the concerns raised.
