A cycleway is planned to be constructed from Smith Street in Kaiapoi, connecting through to Pineacres.

Your feedback is wanted on a route variation for a cycleway from Smith Street in Kaiapoi, connecting through to Pineacres.

This will provide an important link between northern Kaiapoi/the Passchendaele Memorial Path/the Kaiapoi Town Centre and south to the Northern Corridor Shared Path.

In 2023, consultation was carried out with stakeholders along the proposed Kaiapoi to Woodend cycleway route. At the time, the route did not include Sidey Quay.

The Kaiapoi-Tuahiwi Community Board and Council have considered options for progressing this cycling connection and have approved proceeding with the cycleway between Smith Street and Pineacres.

Following recent works to upgrade the Cam River floodgate bridge, the Board has approved a revised route for the cycleway to utilise this floodgate bridge, and the existing underpass beneath Smith Street, via Sidey Quay.

As a stakeholder, or resident along this route, Council wish to consult with you on the proposal and requests any feedback that you may have.

The work will include

Sidey Quay is proposed to become a neighbourhood greenway and form part of the cycle route from Mafeking Bridge/Passchendaele Path to the north.

As such, vehicle speeds along the length of Sidey Quay need to be kept low.

Therefore, the proposed design includes four speed humps located between Ranfurly Street and the floodgate bridge, spaced at 100m centres. These are a ‘watts profile hump’, the same as the ones in Vickery Street and Peraki Street.

Works would also include the construction of an asphalt shared path up the stop bank to the floodgate bridge, connecting to the existing paths on the western side of the Cam River.

The existing path would be widened to a shared path standard to accommodate cyclists.

How the work may affect you

Work is proposed to be completed by June next year, subject to consultation and finalising the route. However, the proposed design is intended to minimise impacts on residents. There will be no loss of parking, and access will remain unrestricted.

Traffic impacts

An example of a neighbourhood greenway can be seen on both Vickery Street and Peraki Street. Please refer to the diagram below which details

the proposed location of the speed humps, and associated works in Sidey Quay.

Thank you for taking the time to consider and provide any feedback you may have on this proposal.
